Car sharing/rental schemes

August 9th, 2009

If for some reason you need to have access to a car why not consider renting one. It is certainly cheaper than owning one if you are just using it occasionally. Just pick up your car and return your car at your preferred location. I used a have a list of companies but I lost it in a recent harddisk crash. The one that I am most familiar with is the NTUC Income carsharing.

erockit bike pedal power

August 9th, 2009

Imagine an electric bicycle that can reduce carbon emissions and travel at 80 km/h. The pedalling does not drives the wheels in the conventional way. Instead the pedalling powers a generator which drives an electric motor.

This has to be the best guide I have come across. I think I need to get one of those foldable bikes. I’m torn between getting a Jz88 and a Dahon.

Finally LTA decided to carry out a trial on foldable bikes on trains and buses.

Mr Brown’s lessons learnt from riding every day to work for a year list a must read. I have tried that Dahon bike and it’s quite comfortable. It even has 3 speeds.

One of the benefits of using a human-powered transport is that it is a non-polluting mode of commuting. The following is a list and a brief description of various human-powered transport that you may want to try out in Singapore.

  • Skates(inline aka rollerblades,roller skates)
  • Skateboard
  • Bicycle
  • Kick Scooter

Skates
Great on the pavement. Allows you to weave in and out of crowds. Portable and it is public transport friendly if you remove your skate which can be hassle. Do expect a non-skate friendly surface (the circle bumps for the blind, drainage gratings, twigs, cracks, etc) when travelling on Singapore pavements. You might want to consider this .

Skateboard
Great on the pavement. Allows you to weave in and out of crowds fairly well. Portable and it is public transport friendly. Should be a little more comfortable then skates while using them on the pavements.

Bicycle
I was told it was illegal to ride on the pavement unless it is a designated bicycle path. Expressways are off-limits for obvious reasons. From my daily bus trips, I noticed that Singapore roads are not very bicycle friendly. There are a couple of bicycle park connector links though. There are couple of bicycle stands located at various bus interchange and MRT stations. I recommend using a foldable bicycle if you intend to bring your bicycle on board the bus or train.

Kick Scooter
It is like that skateboard except smaller. :)
